How to Make Your Workplace Happier

National Work Life Week 2017 from Working Families takes places 2nd – 6th October and is an opportunity for both employers and employees to focus on wellbeing at work and looks to improve the much sought-after (but not always achieved) 'work-life balance'.

A recent study from Georgetown University found that 98 per cent of people reported experiencing 'toxic' behaviour at work. With figures like that, it's clear that a better work-life balance is necessary for many of us.

Having a good work-life balance can bring significant benefits to both employer and employee. A better balance will leave employees more refreshed, creative and productive, so it's in the favour of the employer to offer it. So how can you make your workplace a happier place to be?

5 top tips for employees
  1. Always take a lunch break. Yes, we mean every single day!
  2. Learn to relax when outside of work and create boundaries between home-life and work-life
  3. Don't check work emails on holiday or outside of working hours
  4. Learn to be mindful; it will help you to manage workplace stress
  5. Allow time for interruptions in any given work day

5 top tips for employers
  1. Ensure that all staff take at least the minimum lunch break
  2. Check that employees take their full holiday entitlement
  3. Do not email or call employees outside of working hours or whilst they are on holiday, unless it's a true emergency
  4. Review your company's culture towards working hours
  5. Don't take any business-related stress out on your staff. Learn to manage it through some simple mindfulness techniques
