The benefits of mindfulness for children
Did you see this story about a school in the US that replaced detention with mindfulness classes? The results have been incredible.
We firmly believe mindfulness exercises and regular meditation can have a positive impact on children; here are just some of those benefits:
Better attention span
Most children aren't well-known for their lengthy attention span, are they? But regular practising mindfulness exercises could significantly improve their focus.
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for children can help improve attention, behavioural problems and reduce anxiety in children who started out with high anxiety levels.
Stronger mental health
There's been plenty of research in adults to show this and although research in children is in its early days, the signs are positive. An increasingly number of schools are hosting after-school yoga and meditation clubs, that leave children feeling more relaxed and generally happier.
Greater self-awareness
At the core of mindfulness is a close connection with self-awareness. By regularly practising mindfulness, children can leave to be better aware of their thoughts and become more in tune with their emotions. This is particularly beneficial for teenagers, who can emotionally struggle with changes that come from growing up.
We're excited to see more schools in future adopt meditation classes in place of detention and hopefully they will share their success stories. If your children's school doesn't offer meditation or mindfulness sessions yet, why not introduce them to it at home with one of our mindfulness books?
