Curb your anger by living in the moment

When was the last time you got angry? We've all been there. In fact, anger is one of the six basic human emotions. But nobody enjoys being angry, so how do you curb this negative feeling?

Why are you angry?

According to this 2015 study, which examined the top five triggers of anger in everyday life, the majority of human anger comes from other people. The other four triggers were:

  • Psychological and physical distress
  • Interpersonal demands
  • Environment
  • Unknown

You could be forgiven for reading that list and thinking 'so, everything angers us?'

What can you proactively do to limit your anger? You can learn to be mindful.

With an increase in mental health issues in the UK, more people are gaining an awareness of meditation and mindfulness. It was recently announced that teachers in UK schools are to receive special training in mental health issues. Research into the effects of mindfulness has shown that just a few weeks of mindful training can help people to better control their emotions, including anger.

Research released in 2011 that examined mindfulness specifically in relation to anger found that learning to be more mindful and live in the present moment can result in a decreases in feelings of anger. Mindfulness allows us to notice our feelings, but not to get caught up in our negative emotions. Essentially, in becoming mindful, we are more likely to quickly let go of any feelings of anger.
