Everything you need to know about University Mental Health Day
What is University Mental Health Day?
University Mental Health Day is a national UK campaign that promotes the mental health of people who live, work and study in Higher Education environments.
The campaign is run by Student Minds and UMHAN, and all university students and staff are encouraged to get involved.
University Mental Health Day 2018 will take place on the Thursday 1st March.
Why does the campaign exist?
Attending university raises a number of unique challenges to students' mental health and wellbeing. The years spent at university coincide with the peak age of onset for a range of mental health difficulties, with 75% of all mental health difficulties developing by mid-20s.
Today's generation of young adults are more likely to experience mental illness than previous generations. In fact, in England, 19% of 16–24 year olds experience a mental health condition.
As the campaign itself says, "We all have mental health and therefore all have a part to play in creating a healthy Higher Education community so that all in higher education can thrive."
What is this year's theme?
For 2018, the University Mental Health Day theme is community.
Whether you're a student, a member of support staff, an academic, or a senior university leader, you have a part to play to cultivate a positive mental health community at university.
How will this help?
The campaign aims to:
There are a number of ways to improve your own mental health. If you find life getting a bit too much for you from time-to-time, Mindfulness is a great opportunity to give yourself some time away from hectic daily life. Our journal, That Was Now, can help you to make great strides towards a happier life, while our mindful travel journal, You Are Here, will help you to develop a more peaceful mind while you're on holiday.
Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, get into the habit of taking a break. There's no shame in talking about mental health. Let’s do it together.
